Atix Open-Sharedroot in Fedora 12

 | Tuesday, 11. August 2009 23:07

End of July  the Open-Sharedroot Feature was accepted in Fedora 12:

That is really a good news for Open-Sharedroot Fans like me. So the possibility that OSR will be included in Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 is 100% higher.

Also if it not included the Support Problematic is extrem lower.

I really hope that OSR make it to the final Fedora 12 in October

Intel Nehalem

 | Thursday, 29. January 2009 23:15

In January I try to get the Roadmaps for Intel Nehalem and AMD Istanbul. I only want to find out if this to Architecutre are support with RHEL4 until 2010. Because my draft for a Major Release schedule skip RHEL5 and go direct to RHEL6, but RHEL6 is earliest ready ende of 2010 so we need Hardware for RHEL4 until 2010.

It was not possible to get a answer from our Tier1 Vendor if they support RHEL5 with the new Servermodel with AMD Istanbul. That’s for me not possible that they can’t gibe us this simple answer.

I will maybe try to conntact someone in a higher possition.

for Intel I have a presentation in February, so I hope they will bring some new information. We did a test last year with a 64 Core server ( IBM x3950 M2 ) but the performance was really bad in our Enviroment. Should be really better with Nehalem.

Red Hat Cluster Suite fencing / Dump Problem

 | Tuesday, 30. September 2008 22:52

Because the Red Hat Cluster do fencing with Power off we have long-time ago a fencing Problem. Means if we fence one Member and this one has to write a dump we have only arround 120s to write his dump to the swap file, then he will be fenced with power-off. during this time the Cluster will be freezed because we don’t no the exact status from the member.

To reduce the freeze time, we need a extrem fast local swap storage. So I saw from fusionio.com that they sell a SSD internal disk with 600mb/s radom write ( http://www.fusionio.com/PDFs/Fusion specsheet_v16.pdf )! Thats extrem fast, so I thinking to buy one. But that is one drawback –> price are also very high around 30$/GB and I’m not sure if its works with diskdump.

Red Hat Configuration Management with Puppet

 | Tuesday, 19. August 2008 21:09

For our Red Hat Server Farm we need a Mature Configuration Management. We searching now long time and @ the Linux Tag 2008 in Berlin I saw the Presentation from Francesco witch was very good, because he is IMHO the first Guy he really understand our Problem: For 1 Server we have with all Tierlevels at the End arround 7 Servers to manage!

The Red Hat Satellite Server is for the Configuration Management, after a lot of Disscussions with other Sysadmins not the best Solution. It works but nothing more. Now with the spacewalk Project there will be a big change, but that takes time.
