Fedora 15 Alpha Installation –> Where is my root Disk !

Just Did a simple Fedora 15 Alpha “minimal” Installation with btrfs as root Filesystem. Then I  did some checks and want to see if its really btrfs mounted:

But it turns out that Fedora 15 added some more mounts :-) Thats not really so userfriendly, how would it looks like with some more bind mounts or Filesystems ?

Gmail Backup done !

After I found out that also Gmail maybe has a need for Backup I found a few Ideas / Software to made a Backup.

First I remember that now Zarafa is in Fedora ! –> Thanks to kanarip http://planet.ergo-project.org/

So that’s easy setup a Fedora 14 on my KVM Hosts and install the Zarafa Community Version of it.

# yum install zarafa zarafa-webaccess mysql-server httpd

# service mysqld start
# service zarafa-server start
# service zarafa-gateway start

# zarafa-admin -s
# zarafa-admin -c USERNAME -e USERNAME@localhost -f “Zarafa Tester” -p PASSWORD
# service httpd restart

 

Then go to http://Server/webaccess –> done

maybe also make them persistent against reboot with “chkconfig Servicename on” per Service.

Then the Problem pops up how to sync my Gmail account with the Zarafa Server. So Imapsync was the first choice, but it turns out that it could be tricky not not so performant :-(

Also the Server need lot of Memory, first I think 512 MB is enough, Wrong I go to 1GB / 2CPU now its better ( see graph, red is swap before go to 1GB). Also the process toke very long and skip lot of mails.

 

so  I search another Methode and found it with OfflineIMAP

“Be aware that this is a Offline Version and will be synced back to Gmail if you delete or change something in the Offline Version next Time you sync !!!!!”

Oracle Enterprise Linux 6

Just See the new Release of the Openshot Video Editor, this is a burning point on a Linux System because right now IMHO there is no real good Editor available.

I tried also Kdenlive, pitivi and also Kino but noone is really easy.

Wieder haben wir uns zur Herbst ERFA fĂĽr Enterprise Linux getroffen, dieses Mal zum ersten Mal in der Ostschweiz in St.Gallen. Der Tag ging wie immer im Fluge vorĂĽber. Wie immer hatte eigentlich niemand Zeit aber es kamen doch sehr viele ?!

Hoffe das wird im FrĂĽhling gleichbleiben. bei der ersten Enterprise Linux ERFA 2011

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 is out

Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 is out, at long last. Also IMHO lot of Code come from Fedora 13 not from Fedora 12 also there are lot of Kernel features from 2.6.32 until 2.6.34. The Release is pretty good beside some Problems with the Cluster we found ( it’s running but not really ready for Production ), hope they fix that very soon. Also certification is not there from the Major ISV’s.

Over 3.5 Years after RHEL5, RHEL6 came out. For me I think Red Hat will get into bigger Problems with the Major Releasecycle sooner or later. If they don’t Release a Major Release every 2 -max. 3! Years they don’t get the necessary Hardware update into they’re Kernel. From my side I don’t understand that they wait so long. So at the End the Releaseschedule for RHEL is complete not plannable from outside.Means also the ISV will have some Problems.

Now you have to Subscribe per two – sockel ! also there are 3 diffrent Version for Virtual Guest inclusion. Then more or less all important packages are separate als Add-On ( don’t really understand what is where included )

–> conclusion we are back to RHEL 4 Times


Also the Add-On EUS has two variants EUS and ELS, where EUS extend the Lifecycle of a minor Release the ELS extend the Lifecycle of a Major Release ! BUT the exclusions are Big if you go to Site:

then you found out that Cluster and GFS for RHEL4 are not supported anyway –> How should buy such a ELS ? For which Server do I need a ELS ? Not for a Single Server, this I could maybe migrate.

Fedora 14 out

Fedora 14 is out now. They don’t include systemd right now, so the Bootprocess will stay with upstart.

First Time they will release also some Images on Amazon EC2.

Cluster with Fedora 13 / RHEL 6

After building my new Fileserver I decide to add Clusterservice to it. Because the Fedora 13 Cluster will be very similar to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 which I will use at Work.

Because there is no explicit Doc for Fedora 13, I had help from Fabio thanks really for help!

So just install it:

# yum install ricci luci

one package was missing

# yum install pyOpenSSL

also you have to disable or adjust the Firewall rules

# service iptables stop;chkconfig iptables off
# service ip6tables stop;chkconfig ip6tables off

then go to https://yourhost:8084 and configure a cluster
that’s it

Problems:

I was not able to start luci on my Fileserver, I had to install a new Server which is anyway needed if you want build a cluster. Also you need only one luci Server.

- Bug 630755 – Web-based cluster administration luci don’t start

Then I had a Error 500 when i want check a already build services. no Idea why but I had to delete it and rebuild it.

- Bug 631496 – Error 500 from luci when try to edit a Service
